‘Regional parties will help State bargain with Centre’

The former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has announced that he would resign from the membership of the Legislative Assembly on Friday.

Mr. Yeddyurappa, who tendered resignation to the Chief Minister’s post following his indictment in a Lokayukta report on illegal mining by marching to the Raj Bhavan with 70 MLAs, will put in his papers for the Legislative Assembly membership in a similar fashion.

Mr. Yeddyurappa told presspersons in Shikaripur on Thursday that he would go in a procession from Freedom Park to the Vidhana Soudha and submit his resignation to the Speaker K.G. Bopaiah there at 1 p.m.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said that he had asked his supporters in Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar’s Cabinet, BJP MLAs and MPs to stay away from the procession.

“My followers and well wishers will take part in the procession,” he said. Mr. Yeddyurappa said that he has sent a clear message to Ministers and BJP MPs loyal to him not to attend the convention of Karnataka Janata Party scheduled in Haveri on December 9.

On the participation of BJP MLAs loyal to him in the convention, he said that a decision would be taken later. “I want Jagadish Shettar’s Government to complete the full term,” he said.

Mr. Yeddyurappa, who represents Shikaripur constituency in the Assembly for the seventh time as BJP candidate, said that he decided to tender resignation after consulting the people of Shikaripur. “The people of Shikaripur also are of the opinion that I was betrayed by the BJP leaders,” he said.

‘Bright future’

He said that regional parties have a bright future in the State. The regional political parties will help the State to have a strong bargaining power with the Centre, he said.

On Thursday, a day before tendering resignation to his Assembly membership, he inaugurated a spree of development works in Shikaripur. The newly constructed building of Shikaripur Taluk Working Journalists Association, the newly established divisional office of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company and a transformer repair unit of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) were inaugurated.
