A special court on Tuesday directed former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and his two sons to appear before it on March 23 in connection with the illegal mining case.

Allowing their applications seeking exemption from personal appearance, CBI Court Principal Judge D.A. Venkat Sudarshan directed Yeddyurappa and his two sons B.Y. Vijayendra and B.Y. Raghavendra to appear before it without fail on that day.

Special Public Prosecutor Sudarshan opposed the exemption applications and sought time to clarify and furnish copies of certain statements sought by the accused.

Bail granted

The court had on December 10 last year, granted bail to all 13 accused, including Yeddyurappa and his sons while imposing certain conditions, including directing them to furnish a personal bond of Rs. two lakh each and surety of like sum. The court had in its order put some conditions to regularly appear before it on the date of the hearings, ‘not to tamper’ with prosecution witnesses, surrender their passports and not to leave the country without its prior permission. If they do not have a passport, they should submit an affidavit in this regard on the next day of hearing, it said.

The CBI had on October 16 filed a charge sheet before a special CBI court against Yeddyurappa, his two sons, son-in-law, former minister Krishnaiah Setty, CEO and senior Vice President of a Bellary-based private steel company, a Shimoga-based Trust and five Bellary-based private companies for alleged abuse of official position and corruption.

CBI had registered a case against Yeddyurappa and others pursuant to the Apex Court direction on May 11, last year.
