The construction of a road that connects the Salagame to Belur road began here on Monday. The work, which comprises laying of 3.8-km-long and 18 ft wide road, is estimated to cost Rs. 3 crore.

H.S. Prakash, Hassan MLA, and Patel Shivaram, MLC, attended the ground breaking ceremony on Monday to mark launch of the work. Mr. Prakash said the government had released Rs. 3 crore for the work against a requirement of Rs. 20 crore. “As a temporary measure, the 3.8-km-long road is being built at a cost of Rs. 3 crore. I wish the State government releases additional funds in future,” he said.

Relief sought

Mr. Prakash appealed to the State government to release compensation to those who parted with their land for the road. The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department would take up a multi-village drinking water supply scheme at a cost of Rs.15 crore to meet the drinking water requirement of Vidya Nagar and neighbouring localities on the outskirts of Hassan. The department had floated tender for the work, he said.

The former Hassan Zilla Panchayat president B.R. Satyanarayana and others were present.
