The ancient watch tower (stone mantap) atop Chamundi Hills will soon be fully restored, with the district administration reaching out to the Department of Archaeology, Heritage and Museums to do so.
A portion of the site’s retaining wall caved in recently following heavy rain, putting the four-pillared structure in danger. Describing it as a “special case” as there was confusion on who should take up restoration, Deputy Commissioner C. Shikha, who had inspected the spot after the incident, recently told the department to take up repair work. She also promised to release funds for the work from the Sri Chamundeshwari Temple. It is estimated to cost about Rs. 6 crore.
On Friday, under the supervision of the Archaeology Department, the Public Works Department began the restoration work.
A popular hangout for youngsters, the mantap gives visitors a panoramic view of the ‘city of palaces’. Many scenes of the Kannada film Nenapirali were shot there. The site was illuminated by morning walkers during one Dasara season, making it popular among visitors.
