Though today’s society offers a lot of opportunities to women to have their voice heard in everyday life, Indian women still have to face the patriarchal system, Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Akka Mahadevi Women’s University Sabiha Bhoomigowda has said.

Addressing students after inaugurating Sneha Sammelan programme organised by VG Women’s Degree College to commemorate its golden jubilee celebrations here on Tuesday, Dr. Bhoomigowda said that in the Indian traditional system, the right to be treated as an equal is something that women have had to fight for.

Dr. Bhoomigowda said that being a wife to a man should not be seen as a barrier to empowerment of women; she should be allowed to lead a life of her own and achieve progress in her career without much stress on gender.

She suggested that girl students should take part in both academic and cultural activities which would help them achieve their potential, bring out their hidden talent and also choose a career.

Dr. Bhoomigowda called upon women and students to roll up their sleeves and empower themselves with self-confidence and determination.

Chief Executive Officer of the Kalaburagi Zilla Panchayat Hephsiba Rani Korlapati called upon students to take inspiration from achievers and follow them and to be focussed on goals to realise their dreams. One can get inspired and motivated by ideologies of social reformers, scientists, poets and achievers from various fields that made history, she added.

Lauding the contributions of VG Women’s Degree College, Ms. Korlapati said that the institution had been doing a yeoman service to society for the past five decades by promoting girls’ education in the educationally backward region.

Awards were given away to meritorious students from different streams and also to winners and runners-up in various cultural events.

Basavaraj Bhimalli, president of the Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society, and principal of VG Women’s College Ashok Jeevanagi were present.
