Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, said women becoming part of self-help groups (SHGs) would usher in the desired change, particularly in making them self-reliant economically.

He was speaking after inaugurating the 2001 Pragathi Bandhu SHGs at a function organised jointly by the Dharmasthala Grameenaabhirudi Yojane, Pragathi-Krishna Gramin Bank and Federation of Bellary, Raichur and Koppal Milk Producers’ Union, on Thursday.

“The SHGs formed under Dharmasthala Grameenabhirudi Yojane, have created awareness among women about various social and economical issues and helped them gain knowledge about government welfare schemes,” he said.

He advised them to fulfil the basic needs of their family, including construction of toilets, educating girl child and the like. “Accord priority to the basic needs, maintain cleanliness in your surroundings and lead a healthy life,” he said.

P.T. Parameshwar Naik, Minister of State for Labour and district in-charge, who distributed ‘smart cards’ to the SHGs, called upon them to make best use of the financial assistance extended by the government.
