A 32-year-old woman killed her eight-year-old son and later committed suicide at her husband’s residence at Sankonahatti village of Athani taluk early on Sunday.
The Athani police gave the name of the deceased as Trishula (32), wife of Neminath Nandigoudar. They said she smothered her son Supreet with a pillow and later hanged herself.
Trishula, belonging to an economically poor family, was married to Nandigoudar around 14 years ago. The police said the couple had two children. Though they were initially happy, off late, Nandigoudar had allegedly started harassing her over her poor background. The humiliation may have pushed Trishula to take the extreme step, police suspect.
They also said that the couple’s elder son Shreyas and other family members were sleeping in another room in the house.
The police have detained Nandigoudar for questioning. They have registered a case of murder and unnatural death.
