Woman, four girl children drown in well

A young mother, along with her four girl children, drowned in an open well in Rashing village on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border under Sankeshwar Police Station limits of Hukkeri taluk on Thursday. One of the child was just six months old.

The deceased have been identified as Sunita Eknath Agam (32), Arati (10), Sanjana (7), Amruta (4) and Nishigandha (six months).

The police rushed to the village and removed the bodies with the help of local villagers. Police Inspector Ramachandra Ballari told The Hindu over telephone that the bodies were sent for post-mortem.

Mr. Ballari said Sunita’s husband Eknath has been arrested. The police are trying to ascertain whether the incident was an act of suicide or murder.
