Woman electrocuted while plucking tomato

Villagers stage protest against Bescom

A woman was killed and three others injured when a live electric wire cut lose and fell on them while they were working in a tomato field at Iniminhcenahalli in Chickballapur taluk.

The deceased woman has been identified as Shailaja (26). Injured Rathnamma (37), Savithramma (40) and Anjanamma (35) were admitted to the Government Hospital.

The tragedy occurred when a group of women engaged in plucking tomato in the field on Tuesday. The wire passing the field suddenly cut lose and fell on the workers, leading to Shailaja’s death.

The incident triggered a protest by villagers. Blaming Bescom for irresponsibility leading to the incident, a large number of people staged a protest in front of Bescom office in Chickballapur town.

Bescom authorities have announced a compensation of Rs. three lakh to the family of deceased woman.
