Woman dies after elephant accidentally stamps on her

A 60-year-old woman died on the way to hospital after she was accidentally stamped on by an elephant. The woman identified as Kariyamma of Mallasandra in Tumkur taluk was asleep in a ragi field, with her son and grandchild, on Thursday night. Around 11.30 p.m., the elephant that came to feed on dry grass accidentally stamped on her. But her son and grandchild escaped. Kariyamma could not run and was injured. She was given first aid at the Tumkur district government hospital and was referred to Victoria Hospital in Bangalore. However, she died on the way around 12.30 a.m. on Friday.

Assistant Conservator of Forests B. Devaraju told The Hindu that a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh has been given to the family and another Rs. 3 lakh would be given on Saturday. He said that people were warned not to come out of their houses after sunset but they are worried about their crops and go to their fields to protect them.

Now, three elephants are stationed in Gangasandra tank and six in Mallasandra tank in Tumkur district.

He said that they have asked for additional men from Bangalore to drive the elephants back to Bannerghatta forest.
