When ‘5’ became ‘55’ after shelling out Rs. 850

If errors in mark list are made by varsity staff, why pay for their mistakes, asks a student

Milana K., studying commerce at the Government First Grade College for Women, was shocked when she got her marks card for the first semester. She got first class in all subjects, but Kannada theory, for which she got 5 out of 80.

And, when she applied and got a photocopy of the answer sheet, she found that she had scored 55. One digit had gone missing while the marks were entered.

Ms. Minala now has one question to ask the university. Since she paid Rs. 850 to get the photocopy, and the error occurred at the data entry level, is she not eligible for a refund of the amount she paid? However, it turns out that Mysore University has no refund system.

“Many students have got lesser marks than expected in many papers. But they have not applied for photocopies of answer sheets as it costs a lot of money.

Moreover, the university does not take responsibility for the mistakes committed by its staff.

Many students would apply for photocopies, if the university decides to return the fee if a wrong entry has been made,” said a teaching staff, who did not wish to be named.

“I spent Rs. 850 to prove I was right. I wish I could get back the money,” said Ms. Milana.
