The Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (CNNL) on Thursday started discharging water into the canals from the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir near Srirangapatna for agricultural activities in the Cauvery command areas.

A decision to release water into the canals was taken at a meeting of the Irrigation Consultative Committee of the KRS (Cauvery command area) held in Bangalore on Wednesday. CNNL officials started discharging water into canals, confirmed Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS), Mandya district general secretary, Shambhunahalli Suresh. However, he was unhappy with Minister in-charge M.H. Ambareesh for convening the meeting in Bangalore. It should have been held either in Mysore or Mandya, but Mr. Ambareesh, whom the KRRS leader described as an “escapist”, convened it in Bangalore, he said.
