Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Ltd. (KBJNL) has started releasing 1 tmcft of water from the Narayanpur Dam in the Upper Krishna Project through the Narayanpur Left Bank Canal to address the drinking water shortage in parts of Maharashtra and Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts.
According to reports, water was discharged into the NLBC on Saturday and it will be regulated to get into the escape regulators of the Indi Branch Canal (IBC) and the Jewargi Branch Canal (JBC) to reach its destination in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The reports said that the released water is expected to reach the escape regulators in the IBC and the JBC on May 11 or 12.
The release was being done in a staggered manner and it would continue for the next 20 days.
It was confirmed by Municipal Administration Minister Qamarul Islam in Kalaburagi on Sunday.
Water would be released at the rate of 700 cusecs to barrages in Maharashtra. The reports said that water would be released at the rate of 950 cusecs for 20 days from the IBC and the JBC to meet the drinking water requirements of Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts.
