The drinking water scarcity continues to haunt many parts of the district, particularly villages in Aland taluk, where a steep fall in groundwater levels has left many borewells dry.
Sources told The Hindu here on Friday that the district administration was transporting drinking water in tankers to 49 villages, 30 of which lie in Aland taluk; two each in Chincholi and Chittapur taluks; and four in Gulbarga taluk, while the rest are in Jewargi.
Quality
Sources added that Deputy Commissioner N.S. Prasanna Kumar had directed officials to maintain quality and quantity of the drinking water being supplied in this manner.
The Deputy Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat would randomly visit villages in the district which are receiving water and conduct quality tests personally; however, all executive officers, assistant executive engineers and tahsildars had been instructed to conduct such tests in every village under their jurisdiction without fail.
Officials have also been instructed to hold review meetings on the drinking water situation every Saturday.
Presidents of gram panchayats and the panchayat development officers should hold review meetings every fortnight to discuss new measures to tackle the situation.
‘Regular cleaning’
The Deputy Commissioner has also said that the water storage tanks should be cleaned every 15 days.
In addition, any village that reports a shortage of drinking water should be supplied within 24 hours of the complaint.
Panchayat development officers are responsible for maintaining records of the water supplied and tahsildars have been authorised to settle bills for the transportation of water.
