The bail plea of Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University H.B Walikar, who has been arrested by the Lokayukta police in connection with alleged irregularities in the university, was rejected by the Special Lokayukta Court here on Thursday.

The Third Additional District Judge (Prevention of Corruption) H.S. Ballolli, however, allowed the bail plea of three other accused — Registrar (Evaluation) H.T. Pote, Finance Officer S. Rajashri and Personal Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor S.L. Bilagi — and granted them conditional bail. They have been asked to furnish personal bonds of Rs. 2 lakh each. They have been asked not to tamper with evidence, not to leave the district, and be present before the investigating officer as and when summoned.

In all, 11 persons, including Prof. Walikar, have been named in the case registered by the Lokayukta police on a complaint filed by the Registrar of the university Chandrama Kanagali based on the directions of Governor Vajubhai Vala.

On Tuesday evening, Mr. Walikar and Ms. Rajashri were admitted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital in Hubli following complaints of high sugar level and high blood pressure. Mr. Pote and Mr. Bilagi, who were lodged in the Dharwad Central Jail, were shifted to KIMS Hospital on Wednesday evening after they complained of health problems.

Put off

Meanwhile, hearing on the anticipatory bail applications filed by six others mentioned in the case has been put off to October 28.
