H.B. Walikar, who was denied bail by the Special Lokayukta Court here on Thursday, has been suspended from the post of Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University.

In-charge Vice-Chancellor S.S. Hugar confirmed that Prof. Walikar’s suspension order, despatched from the Governor’s office, reached the university on Thursday evening. Prof. Walikar would have completed his four-year term on Friday.

In all, 11 persons have been named in the case registered by the Lokayukta police pertaining to irregularities in the university. The Lokayukta police arrested four of the accused, including Prof. Walikar, on Monday.

On Thursday, the Third Additional District Judge (Prevention of Corruption) H.S. Ballolli rejected the bail plea of Prof. Walikar but granted bail to Registrar (Evaluation) H.T. The Department of Higher Education, which suspended Mr. Pote, has appointed Basavanna of the Department of Geology in his place. J.S.
