Vice-President to inaugurate JSS S&T University on Saturday

The newly constituted JSS Science and Technology University (JSS S&T University) which has gcome into being following a notification by the State government, will focus on inter-disciplinary research and greater industry-academia collaboration for relevant technical education to meet the demands of the changing economy.

The University will be officially inaugurated by Vice-President M. Hamid Ansari on Saturday (July 23) and it will be marked by unveiling the foundation plaque of the new academic building block.

Students enrolling for engineering course at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) in the academic year 2016-17, will be the first batch to receive the degree from the newly constituted university when they pass out in four years’ time.

SJCE, which is administered by the JSS Mahavidyapeetha and which recently celebrated its golden jubilee, was affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), was granted autonomy in view of its excellence in academic activities and consequent to a government notification, has been accorded a University status.

B.G. Sangameshwar, designated as the first Vice-Chancellor of the JSS S& T University, told mediapersons here on Wednesday that the University has envisioned a number of international engagements and collaborations which will help gain knowledge and ensure the highest quality of teaching and research. “The biggest takeaway on securing the university status is the greater academic freedom to conceive and formulate new programmes which otherwise would take an year or more’’, said Mr. Sangameshwar.

All the existing 12 UG programmes and 16 PG programmes will continue besides the introduction of 2 new courses this year on corporate finance and data analytics while an integrated MCA programme is also in the offing from the next academic year, said Syed Shakib-ur-Rahman, Principal, SJCE. The research and development programmes will be taken by the respective departments with collaborations with industry specialists in the respective branches, he added.

SJCE has 12 laboratories in different fields established by major companies such as Philips and Analogue and more are in the pipeline including collaboration with the best technical universities from across the globe with outreach programmes and joint research, Prof.Sangameshwar added.
