The local unit of the All-India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) has opposed Karnatak University’s decision to close down 11 departments, including Humanities and Sanskrit, citing lack of demand for those courses and financial constraints.
In a memorandum submitted to Registrar G.B. Nandan, AIDSO secretary Sharanu Gonavar stated that the university’s decision to close down 11 departments, , was uncalled for.
Mr. Gonavar said it was a pity that the university decided to close down the Sanskrit Department even as the State government had opened an independent university for Sanskrit. A university should be the centre of different streams of knowledge and it should not be restricted to courses that were in demand. Instead of closing down these departments, the university should popularise these courses and encourage students to pursue them, he said.
