Members of the academic council of Kuvempu University have registered strong opposition to the proposal to do away with external evaluation for postgraduate courses.
At present, a two-tier evaluation system is followed for PG courses. Under this, answer scripts are evaluated by both internal and external examiners, and the final mark is the average of the two evaluations. With the aim of eliminating procedural delay in announcement of results, the university has proposed to do away with external evaluation.
Speaking on the issue at the academic council meeting at Jnana Sahyadri campus in Shankaraghatta on Wednesday, Ravindra Gadkar, a member, said as many departments are facing staff crunch it would be unwise to tinker with the existing system.
Hiremani Naik, dean, Faculty of Commerce, said it was unfair to think that external evaluation was a financial burden. The system protects students from erratic evaluation, she said.
Some members had called external evaluation a burden for the university. They had also said there were often problems in arranging for an external examiner.
Poornananda D.S., another academic council member, said PG students often write answers influenced by their own opinion or perception. The answer scripts can be evaluated in a fair manner only in a two-tier system, he said.
Vice-Chancellor Jogan Shankar said the university would take a call on the matter after holding a talk with teachers serving in various departments.
