Varahi project work will be expedited: Patil

M.B. Patil, Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation, said on Friday that work on the Varahi Right Bank Canal till the 18th kilometre would be completed by the end of April, which would provide irrigation facilities to farmers till that point.

Addressing presspersons after conducting a review meeting on the progress of the Varahi Irrigation Project, along with Revenue Minister V. Srinivas Prasad, Forests Minister B. Ramanath Rai and Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, Mr. Patil said that as per the project plan, the 43-km long Right Bank Canal would provide irrigation facilities to 1,992 hectares, the 44-km long Left Bank Canal (LBC) to 10,987 hectares and the 33-km long Varahi Lift Canal to 2,723 hectares in 33 villages in Kundapur taluk and 35 villages in Udupi taluk.

Presently the Department was giving priority to the construction of the right bank canal and the next priority was to complete the left bank canal to the 30th km by December, 2015, or April. 2016,. This would provide irrigation facilities to 5,600 hectares of land.

The work on the remaining area and the Varahi Lift Canal would be taken up later.

It had been decided to have a Coordination Committee, comprising the Deputy Commissioner, the Deputy Conservator of Forests and other related officials, to thrash out matters connected to land surveys, deemed forests and the related matter.
