S.F. Patil, director, Water and Land Management Institute (WLMI), Dharwad, stressed on using technological developments to supply clean and safe drinking water to the people in rural areas.
Inaugurating a one-day workshop on ‘Clean and Safe Drinking Water Supply for Rural Community Using River Bank Filtration Technique (RBF)’ at Visvesvaraya Technological University’s Jnana Sangama campus here recently, he said that the officials concerned must take best advantage of scientific and technological developments, which would help in the prevention of diseases.
The workshop was jointly organised by VTU, National Institute of Hydrology, Belagavi, and Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Bengaluru. M.S. Mohan Kumar, professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, spoke about managing water resources.
He said, “RBF technology was the latest approach towards purification and delivery of clean safe drinking water to rural communities along river-fed areas. RBF operated by extracting water from the wells in close proximity with rivers where the soil layers acted as filtration zone.”
Sudhir Kumar, scientist ‘G’ at National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, spoke on ‘RBF as a viable solution for clean and safe drinking water supply’ and explained about the application of ‘isotope technology’ in ‘water quality management’ and challenges of water quality improvement.
