Use of MSG has govt. worried

March 20, 2017 11:15 pm | Updated 11:15 pm IST - BENGALURU

The government has decided to seek an expert report and ban on mono-sodium glutamate (MSG) in Indo-Chinese snacks such as gobi manchurian in eateries, if its impact on health is found to be harmful. Health Minister K.R. Ramesh Kumar told the Council that though MSG was allowed to be used in restricted quantities as taste-enhancer, there was no mechanism to check whether restaurants and roadside eateries followed norms.

Replying to a question by Ramachandre Gowda of the BJP, Mr. Kumar said there was no proper response from officials and no cases had been booked so far against eateries for crossing the specified limits.
