Use machines to fill labour shortfall, CREDAI urges builders

Anticipating construction labour to become even scarcer in the coming years, Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India’s (CREDAI) Karnataka unit president R. Nagaraj called upon builders to shift to mechanisation.

Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day international seminar on ‘Industrialisation in construction’ on Saturday, Mr Nagaraj said sourcing construction workers was one of the biggest challenges facing the construction industry in the State.

Migrants comprise 75 per cent of the construction labour force in the State and locals comprise a minority. "Once development takes places in States from where these construction workers come, builders will have no option but to depend on machines. So, this is the right time to start adopting mechanisation,” he said.

He said the future of construction is expected to move towards assembling buildings with robots. “Research in this area is already underway in the US,” he said.

About 600 delegates are expected to attend the two-day event, where experts will talk on topics relating to industrialisation of construction, precast construction, latest equipment available for mechanisation of construction, and new materials available for construction.
