Senior Congress leader Janardhan Tonse took charge as the chairman of the Udupi Urban Development Authority (UUDA) here on Wednesday.

Speaking after taking charge, Mr. Tonse said that he would ensure that there was transparency in all transactions of the authority.

He would prioritise providing sites to the applicants after locating a layout for sites and getting it cleared by the UUDA Committee.

He would resign a day before his term of 18 months ended, he said.

Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, said that under the government order on ‘Akrama-Sakrama’ scheme, applicants had an opportunity to regularise their illegal constructions within a year.

He said he had urged Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj H.K. Patil to give concession to Udupi district with regard to Forms 9 and 11 of the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Rules (Taxes and Fees) for the sale and purchase of land in the rural areas.
