The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha has urged the Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to waive off farm loans by June 15 in order to honour his promise, failing in which the KRRS has threatened to stage a severe agitation across the State from June 18.

The CM had sought time till June 15 to waive off farm loans, the KRRS said, and added that the CM had not yet started ground preparations for the waiver.

Badagalapura Nagendra, general secretary, State unit, KRRS, said on Wednesday that farmers have to repay the interest-free loan amount of ₹3 lakh by June 16 availed from co-operative institutions.

If the farmers did not repay the loan amount by June 16, an interest of 12% would be levied on the loan amount besides farmers would become defaulters, he said.

Many farmers used to clear loans by pledging their valuables so as to be able to get fresh loans, he said, adding that the assurance of the CM had stopped many from settling the loan amounts.

Preparations are on for the ensuing Kharif season and farmers need financial assistance from banks to carry out agricultural activities, Mr. Nagendra said adding that the farmers have to approach the banks for their financial needs.

Paddy procurement centres

Mr. Nagendra also urged the State government to set up procurement centres in paddy growing areas including Mysuru and Mandya.

He said that farmers were expecting a good yield of paddy this time and demanded that government set up procurement centres so as to ensure that farmers would not be exploited by middlemen or commission agents.
