The 96th convocation of the University of Mysore, coinciding with its centenary year, will be held on April 11. Women constitute more than 60 per cent of the 28,687 candidates, who are eligible to receive degrees.
Infosys co-founder and Chairman Emeritus N.R. Narayana Murthy will deliver the convocation address. He, along with Nirmalanandanatha Swami, president, Sri Adichunchanagiri Shikshana Trust, and Vijay Kumar Saraswath, member, NITI Aayog, and defence scientist, will be conferred with honorary doctorates.
Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, K.S. Rangappa, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said 17,221 women and 11,466 men will receive degrees, while 461 candidates will receive Ph.D. (176 women and 285 men).
Out of 28,687 candidates, 7,189 will be conferred with master’s degree of which 3,845 are women. Also, 21,037 candidates will receive bachelor’s degree, of which 13,200 are women candidates.
The break-up of the number of students from different streams, who are eligible to receive Ph.D., PG and UG degrees, is as follows: Arts — 7,448, Commerce — 12,225, Education — 3,853, Law — 20, and Science and Technology — 5,141 candidates.
In the postgraduate section, S. Suma (MSc. chemistry) is the topper in the science and technology stream winning 12 medals and three cash prizes.
Longjam Rebitarani Devi (M.A. in economics) has bagged the highest number of seven medals and three cash prizes in the Arts stream, while S. Divya topped the scroll of honours in Commerce (MBA agri business) by bagging five medals. In the education stream, T.B. Manjunath (M.P.Ed.) is the topper and has bagged four medals and two cash prizes, while H.B. Tanuja is the topper in law stream having topped the LLM course with two medals and three cash prizes. The valedictory of the centenary celebrations of the university will be held on July 22 and Vice-President Hamid Ansari has confirmed participation, said Prof. Rangappa. There will be a slew of programmes, which will be attended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, scientist C.N.R. Rao and others, he added.
Meanwhile, commemorative coins of Rs. 5 and Rs. 100 will be issued to mark the centenary of the university and the government has given its approval, said Prof. Rangappa.
The date of issue will be confirmed later, he said.
