World Mental Health Day on the theme ‘Living with Schizophrenia’ was marked by a public awareness rally and a street play on Friday.
Organised by the JSS Nursing School and the Department of Psychiatry, JSS Medical College, the objective was to draw attention to the plight of patients afflicted with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.
The play titled ‘schizophrenia and life’ was staged near Devaraja Market by students of JSS Nursing School. A special lecture on ‘mental illness – awareness and cure’ was delivered by Dr. T.S. Satyanarayana Rao, lecturer, Department of Psychiatry, JSS Medical College and Hospital. Literature and brochures on schizophrenia was distributed to the public.
Schizophrenia is a mental health condition that causes psychological problems, including developing suspicion and thoughts based on hearing or seeing things that do not exist. Nine out of 1,000 persons are likely to develop schizophrenia. The illness does not discriminate between the rich and the poor or the literate and the illiterate.
