Rumours about child snatching causing trouble

A youth was found in unconscious condition in a village in Mulbagal taluk on Friday. This has created panic among the people following widespread rumours about child snatchers.

The 22-year-old, identified as Bhaskar, was found at Kannasandra under Rural police limits in Mulbagal taluk. He reportedly lost conscious when he went to attend nature’s call on the outskirt of the village.

The police visited the spot. The youth was admitted to a local hospital. The reason for his condition was yet to be ascertained.

The rumours about child snatchers created panic in the region with one video footage of a man being thrashed on suspicion of being involved in the incidents went viral. Some miscreants caught a mentally retarded person near Vijalapur gate in Mulbagal taluk and thrashed him. They recorded the thrashing and uploaded it saying he was a child snatcher.

When the police took the youth into custody it was confirmed that he was mentally challenged.

In the meantime, the residents of Keeluholali village in Mulbagal taluk caught a woman suspecting her to be a child snatcher and handed over her to the police on Thursday.

A couple of days ago, the public caught a stranger on similar grounds at KGF.

The police have clarified that no complaints about kidnap of children was lodged in the district. The Superintendent of Police has warned of stringent action against those creating panic by uploading fake messages about child snatching on social media.

She also appealed to the people not to take law into their own hands and report to the police if any suspicious activities were noticed.
