July 10, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - BELAGAVI:

The city police here on Friday arrested a Davangere-based jeweller on the charge of carrying Rs.58 lakh of unaccounted money, at the Hirebagewadi toll plaza on Pune-Bengaluru NH4, 20 km from here.

At a press meet on Friday night, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarnath Reddy said that the accused, Bhagvan Sankal Gopal Ramji of Kaveri Jewellers at Davangere, could not produce documents to prove the source of the money he was carrying in a new car from Davangere to a town in Rajasthan. He said that J. Raghu, police inspector attached to Hirebagewadi police station, and his team spotted Gopal’s car at the toll plaza and they found the money stashed in a bag. Gopal claimed that it was “black money” meant for purchasing a site in Rajasthan. He said that it was not related to any ‘hawala’ deal. The police registered a case and informed the Department of Income Tax.
