The Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Udupi were attacked allegedly by those indulging in illegal sand extraction when they raided an extraction site at Kandlur village near Kundapur early on Monday. The police have arrested seven persons on an attempt to murder charge in this connection.

Both the DC, Priyanka Mary Francis, and AC, Shilpa Nag, had gone in separate private cars to conduct a surprise inspection after getting complaints. Ms. Francis told presspersons that they had gone without informing other officials because of complaints that the illegal sand extractors always got a tip-off, quite mysteriously.

Superintendent of Police K.T. Balakrishna said seven persons had been arrested in connection with the assault at Kandlur. A case of attempt to murder and preventing public servants from discharging their duty has been booked. Another case has also been booked against the six arrested by Ms. Francis for illegal sand extraction in Halnadu.
