A four-day annual Krishi Mela will begin at the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad campus, on Saturday.
Vice-Chancellor D.P. Biradar told presspersons here on Thursday that this year’s event was themed on “Pulses for Nutritional Security”. Accordingly, this year’s event would strive to sensitise and encourage farmers to take up cultivation of pulses.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would inaugurate the Krishi Mela at 4.30 p.m. Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, Minister in-charge of the district Vinay Kulkarni and others would participate, he said.
Farmers Right Authority and Plant Protection Varieties Chairman R. Hanchinaal would inaugurate a Seed Mela. The varsity would release high quality seeds and sell them on the occasion. This year, the university had set a target to sell nearly 4,511 quintals of different seeds. This apart, farmers who have been protecting foundation seeds would be identified and honoured.
A fruit and flower show and a Matsya Mela would be held simultaneously, he added.
Nearly 900 stalls would be set up and technical sessions on agriculture-related issues would be held on all three days. Farmers could interact with experts and scientists on farm-related issues, Mr. Biradar said.
