Two undertrials Rebanna (23) and Ayyalappa (22) escaped from the Bellary Central Jail early on Friday by scaling a 12-foot wall.
Vishwanathaiah, Director-General of Police (Prisons), who arrived here from Bangalore to gather information on the jailbreak, told presspersons that Rebanna and Ayyallappa broke the windowpane of Block 5 D, where they were lodged, and climbed the outer wall of the jail by tying up several bedsheets and lungis.
Incidentally, the electrical fencing on the wall was not functioning.
The two undertrials are from Gondgi village in Sindagi taluk of Bijapur district. They were among the eight arrested on the charge of murdering two drivers and driving away with their vehicles. They have been lodged in the jail for a year now. Of the eight, three are out on bail.
Suspended
Mr. Vishwanathaiah, after making preliminary enquiries and inspecting the jail premises, said that two prison constables, Vishwanath Asode and Krishna Huilgol, who were on night duty, have been suspended on the charge of negligence and dereliction of duty.
He said that a criminal complaint is being lodged against the two convict warders. He said that a detailed inquiry would be held, based on which action would be taken against the jailor on duty.
To a question, he said that he would inquire into the malfunctioning of the electrical fence.
