Two shepherds drowned in the Tunga river near Holalur village in the district on Monday.

The police gave the names of the victims as Maayappa (45) and Beerappa (35), both from Sadalaga in Belagavi district. The duo met their end when they ventured into the river for a swim. The body of Maayappa was recovered with the help of local divers, while the second body is yet to be traced. The river is said to be infested with crocodiles and the locals suspect the shepherds might have been attacked by them. However, the police said the reason for the death can be confirmed only after the post-mortem.
