Two more farmers committed suicide in the State.
Paramanna Madivalappa Tilagul (48) of Mudanur village in Surpur taluk of Yadgir district consumed pesticide in his field on Friday afternoon. On noticing the incident, neighbours took him to the government hospital at Kembhavi, where he was referred to Vijayapura for further treatment. How, however, died late on Friday.
Surpur tahsildar Arun Kumar Kulkarni told The Hindu over phone that the deceased had availed himself of a loan of Rs. 1.18 lakh from a nationalised bank to cultivate cotton crop in 13 acres of land.
According to sources, he had also taken Rs. 6 lakh from others to develop the land. As he was unable to repay the loan owing to crash in prices, he ended his life, said sources.
In Davangere
Mounting debts allegedly pushed Basavarajappa (55) from Lakkemakthenhalli village in Davangere taluk to end his life.
Two years ago, Basavarajappa had taken Rs. 4 lakh to grow maize in his land. But he did not get good yield owing to adverse climatic conditions.
Unable to tolerate the torture from moneylenders, Basavarajappa had consumed poison a fortnight ago and was admitted to the Davangere government hospital.
He breathed his last on Saturday morning.
Farmer leader Ravikumar, who visited the hospital, alleged that the State government was directly responsible for the death of farmers in different parts of the State.
At least now, the government should frame policies to ensure that farmers get suitable price for their crops, he said.
