A man and his son died in a hospital after they were knocked unconscious when a sand mound caved in on the Nagavalli tank bed in Tumakuru taluk on Sunday.

The police identified the deceased as Umesh, 44, and Nikhil, 15, of Sopanahalli. Their relative, Govindaraju, who had sustained injuries, has been shifted to a hospital in Bengaluru.

The three had been digging the tank bed for sand for construction of their house. They had dug a pit and were filling sand into plastic bags when the sand mound caved into the pit.

When they did not return, their relative, Manjunath, went in search of them. He found their two-wheeler, bags filled with sand and their slippers near the pit and informed the police.

The police visited the spot, removed the sand and pulled out the three from the pit. They were unconscious, but two of them died in the hospital. A case has been registered at Hebbur police station.
