A two-day “Indo-U.S. Hand Surgery Course” aimed at further improving the expertise in the field in the country began here on Saturday.
Hand surgery expert from the U.S. Chaitanya S. Mudgal,, who belongs to North Karnataka, has taken up the initiative and Hubballi Dharwad Orthopaedic Association, Karnataka Orthopaedic Association and Deshpande Education Trust have joined hands with him.
Inaugurating the course, President of Karnataka Orthopaedic Association Purushottam said small mistakes cause irreparable damage to the hands and only advanced technology and skill training could help in conducting successful hand surgeries.
Dr. Mudgal said that the main objective of the course was to share information on the latest developments in the field of hand surgery. The focus of the course would be maximum knowledge transfer and application in real life situation. He said hand surgery was crucial especially in a country like India where industrial accidents were high and there were no stringent laws to protect the victims. “There is expertise available. But we need to create more centres of excellence. The number of fellowships available in the field of hand surgery in India is very low and we are just trying to do our bit in sharing the knowledge”, he said, recalling his association with the region.
Event coordinator A.V. Kalamdani briefed about the initiative. President of Hubballi-Dharwad Orthopaedic Association Satish Irakal said that there were plans to conduct more such programmes in the coming years.
Apart from Dr. Mudgal, specialists in hand surgery from the U.S. including Sharmila Mudgal and Sunil Ryan and a few experts from Mumbai are conducting the course. Event coordinator Sachin Revankar, Chetan Jayade and CEO of Deshpande Foundation Naveen Jha were present.
