In a rain-related mishap, a two-and-half year old girl died after she drowned in a stormwater drain running in front of her house in Muneshwaranagar in Udayagiri police station limits in the early hours of Sunday.

The tragedy took place when Mohammed Hussain’s house was flooded with water following the rains that lashed the city on Saturday night.

“When the family members opened the door to drain out the water flooding their house, their daughter Alia went out and accidentally fell into the drain opposite the house,” said Mysuru tahsildar Ramesh Babu, who visited the area.

Though the family members picked her up from the water within minutes and rushed her to K R Hospital, she was declared brought dead. She had drowned in the drain, officials said.

Former Mayor and councillor Ayub Khan said the girl accidentally fell into the drain and was swept away.

While the family members and neighbours were searching for her by removing the stone slabs over the drain, the body was found stuck to a drinking water pipeline running perpendicular to the drain at a distance of some 40 metres from where she plunged, Mr Khan said.

Meanwhile, in Chamarajanagar, a 45-year-old man reportedly died when the wall of his house collapsed in Kandahalli village in Chamarajanagar district’s Yalandur taluk following heavy rains. The deceased Nagaraj is survived by his wife and two children.
