After a week of holidays declared in the wake of unrest over a student's suicide last week, students of P.A. College of Engineering attended classes on Thursday.
However, the two persons accused in the suicide case are absconding.
The suicide of Mehnaz, a second-year biotechnology student, on April 10 sparked off protests in the college and the police chased away students who allegedly indulged in stone-pelting.
Mehnaz's local guardian Mohammed Basheer lodged a complaint with the Konaje police.
He named Campus Director Udayan and Disciplinary Committee member Farooq in the complaint and held them responsible for Mehnaz's death.
A student of the college, who requested anonymity, told The Hindu that students had placed three demands before the management on the day of Mehnaz's suicide. “We told the management that we would not attend classes until they met our demands, so they declared a holiday,” he said. After seven days of “holidays” declared by the management for all students except for those appearing for examinations, classes finally resumed on Thursday after college authorities assured the students that their demands would be met.
Three demands
The student said that their demands were: to issue a media statement clearing Mehnaz's name from all rumours doing rounds, suspension of the two accused in the case, and formation of a Students' Council.
He said that the college had assured the students that all their demands would be met.
A Student Council was “necessary” the student said, so that if there was any issue between the students and management in future, a student representative can be present to act as an interface between the students and the management.
Director (Administration) of P.A. College of Engineering K.M. Haneef told The Hindu that the Konaje police were investigating the case. He added that the college management had suspended the two persons named in the FIR.
Konaje Sub-Inspector Shivaprakash said that both the accused were absconding from the day Mehnaz committed suicide.
