This Independence Day, Gadag will add another feather in its cap. It will be the first city in North Karnataka and second in the State to have the tallest flagpole and a tricolour flying round the clock.
At the Gadag Cooperative Industrial Estate, final touches are being given to the scene, where a 102 ft-high aluminium flagpole is being set up to hoist a 8x12 metre national flag, which has been procured from Mumbai.
Landmark in cityThe one-and-a-half acre in the industrial estate is set to become a landmark as the tricolour will fly round the clock with floodlights illuminating the area and a park around it.
“This is the brainchild of RDPR Minister H.K. Patil, who is the founder of the industrial estate. It will be the pride of the city,” its present chairman Rangappa Odugoudar said.
Sixty plaques“We want to make the visit to the park a memorable one and also infuse patriotic fervour. It will have plaques showcasing various stages of the independence struggle and prominent freedom fighters,” Mr. Odugoudar told The Hindu . “The installation of the 60 steel plaques will be completed on Sunday,” he added.
Guidelines in placeIn 2009, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs permitted hoisting of the national flag at night provided it was kept well-illuminated and the pole was over 100 ft tall.
