The Hosadurga, Hiriyur taluks and surrounding areas within the 20 km radius in Chitradurga district experienced tremors around 6.43 a.m. on Sunday morning for a few seconds. In panic, residents in Kanchipura, Kittadal, Chikbyaladkere and Nagathihalli came out of their houses to open areas for safety.

Ramakka, 72, from Kanchipur village in Hosadurga taluk was attempting to run out of her house when she had a heart attack and died.

Residents recalled hearing a loud noise before the tremors were felt. However, no damage to the property has been reported in the district.

Manju, a resident of Doddabyladkere village, said a temple in the village had developed cracks. Initially, the residents thought that the loud sound was because of some blasting activities at a stone quarry nearby. But when they felt the tremors, they ran out of the house for safety.

Tumakuru experiences them too

Tremors were also felt in some villages of Chikkanayakanahalli taluk of Tumakuru district on Sunday morning.

Around 6.40 a.m., residents of Huliyar, Kenkere, Gaanadaalu, Yagachihalli, Dasudi, Thammadihalli, Ranganakere, Somanahalli, Dabbegunte, Hoysalakatte in Chikkanayakanahalli taluk experienced the quake for around five seconds. These villages border the Chitradurga district.

They immediately ran out of their houses. Some residents said that a few household items such as utensils fell in the impact.

However, Deputy Commissioner K.P. Mohan Raj told The Hindu that “There is no loss of either property or lives.”

A earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter Scale was recorded.
