Incessant rain in the past few days have uprooted over 400 roadside trees and hundreds of electricity poles, bringing the city to a halt. While civic authorities are yet to clear the mess, the city traffic police have taken the initiative to clear the way for the smooth flow of traffic.
As per the plan, traffic constables and patrolling vehicles have been equipped with axes, buckets, rope, and shovels, to repair the damaged roads and ease the flow of traffic. Constables at the junctions have also been provided implements to clear tree branches, and clear flooding.
Anticipating more rain in the coming days, the traffic police have identified strategic locations so that patrol vehicles carrying equipment can reach the spot if required.
The flooding of roads, especially at major junctions, is also a cause for concern. “Motorists are the worst affected during the rain. Uprooted trees and poles pose a safety hazard and obstruct traffic. Despite repeated appeals, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has not heeded to our requests,” a senior police officer said.
“It is part of the job as each constable deputed at the signal is responsible for ensuring smooth flow of traffic. Unlike the public, we cannot blame civic agencies. Our focus is to get things moving despite all odds,” said a traffic constable at a junction in Jayanagar, where the rain created havoc recently.
