Traffic movement disrupted as bridge across TB canal collapses in Bellary

The nearly 50-year-old concrete bridge across Tungabhadra high-level canal, on NH 63, near Toranagal, collapsed on Sunday. There were no casualties.

The shrinking of the foundation on Torangal end is believed to have led to the bridge collapse.

The movement of vehicular traffic between Hospet and Torangal-Bellary was cut off and a large number of heavy vehicles, carrying iron ore, steel from JSW Steel and other goods, were stranded on either side. The exact time of the collapse is yet to be ascertained.

Two girders measuring about 20 feet at the Toranagal end, have collapsed.

Police have diverted the vehicular traffic from Bellary heading towards Hospet, at Kuditini to reach the destination via Daroji and Kamalapur.

Some of the light vehicular traffic from Hospet towards Torangal and Bellary are taking a diversion at Kurekuppa using the canal road.
