The Bangalore Potato and Onion Traders’ Association has called for a bandh at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard at Yeswantpur on Thursday in protest against the inauguration of the newly built market at Dasanapura on the outskirts of the city.

The new APMC market at Dasanapura, located on the Bangalore-Tumkur Road, has been named Potato and Onion Mega Market.

“The market is not useful for farmers and traders as it is located on the outskirts of the city,” Bangalore Potato and Onion Traders Association president B.L. Shankarappa and secretary C. Udaya told The Hindu on Sunday.

“The government has instructed traders to shift their business from the APMC yard at Yeswantpur. There are over 350 potato and onion traders transacting business of Rs. 6 crore to Rs. 7 crore daily. During peak season, the business touches Rs. 15 crore,” they said.

“The government has not taken the merchants into confidence before building the new market,” Mr. Shankarappa said.

The association has submitted a proposal to the government to construct a market at Herohalli at Srigandhada Kavalu on Tumkur Road on 70 acres of land owned by the APMC.
