Various trade unions, including the Centre for Indian Trade Unions, the All India Trade Union Congress, the All India United Trade Union Centre, the LIC Employees Association, under the banner of the district unit of Joint Committee of Trade Unions on Thursday staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office to protest against the policies of the Union government.

Trade unions have charged the government with adopting a pro-corporate sector stand which proved detrimental to the working class. Citing instances, they said amending the Labour Act through ordinance, enhancing the quota for Foreign Direct Investment in LIC and banking sectors, amendments to Land Acquisition Bill among others were pro-capitalist and severely affected the working class.

10 major demands

Members of various trade unions staged a protest here on Thursday against the ordinance on land reforms and to press for their 10 major demands.

The token sit-in in front of the Mini Vidhanasoudha on Lamington Road here was staged under the aegis of Joint Committee of Trade Unions. The protestors alleged that the Union government was unilaterally amending Labour laws with the sole intention of benefitting the industrialists, which in return would adversely affect the working class.

Day-long dharna

The joint action committee of the Central Trade Unions staged a day-long dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kalaburagi against the anti-labour policies and amendments to the Land Acquisition Act.

The dharna was part of a nationwide agitation, called by the central trade unions, to register their protest and build a people’s movement against the Union government’s anti-people and anti-workers policies.

The protesters criticised the Union government for disinvestments in the Coal India.
