Three members of a family, including a young girl, reportedly committed suicide at their residence in Sangameshwara Extension in Hassan on Monday. One person, who was named in the suicide note, has been arrested.

The deceased have been identified Jayashankar (35), his wife Karuna (32) and their daughter Bhoomika.

Jayashankar had called up Hassan Superintendent of Police Raman Gupta and a couple of friends to convey his decision to commit suicide, minutes before the act. Jayashankar was running a finance firm and had borrowed money for interest from several people.

Mr. Gupta told presspersons that Jayashankar had called him. “He said he would commit suicide. I told him to calm down and to come and meet me. I also told him my officers would reach him soon and asked for his address. By the time the local police reached his house, he was dead,” he said. Vijay Kumar, a friend who spoke to Jayaprakash minutes before he died, said “He called me to say that he was committing suicide. For a moment, I thought he was kidding. But, he repeated that he was serious and disconnected the call,” he said.

Arrested

The police found a suicide note near Jayashankar’s body, which said he had borrowed Rs. 18 lakh from Raghu alias Maala. He had cleared the loan but Raghu was harassing him for more money, the note said. Based on the note, Raghu was arrested for further investigation.

Post-mortem was conducted at the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences.
