Threats from persons claiming to be underworld operatives has resurfaced with a resident of Mulky, near Mangaluru, complaining that he has received calls seeking ransom between January 29 to April 6.
In a complaint filed before the Mulky police, Harish Putran said he has received calls on his mobile phone by person claiming to be underworld operative Ravi Poojary at different times from 9 p.m. of January 29 to noon of April 6. The person, who has used internet to call him, demanded Rs. 5 crore as ransom. The caller threatened to attack Harish and his family members if he failed to pay the ransom.
The complainant has suspected involvement of three persons said to be aides of Ravi Poojary behind these threat calls. The police have registered his complaint.
Few months ago there were a series of calls from persons claiming to be underworld operatives to realtors and industrialists. While some pointed towards the underworld operatives, the calls were largely by persons claiming to be underworld operatives. The then Police Commissioner R. Hithendra had intensified police vigilance on such calls that led to arrest of some persons. The police had also arrested persons faking identity of underworld operatives and making ransom calls.
