The losses

Even by the government’s own estimates, over 1,200 households were affected by last week’s floods.

Resident Welfare Associations on Thursday submitted a preliminary list of damages to the House Committee on Tank Encroachment.

“The worst affected are those whose vehicles were submerged in the rains. Insurance companies will not pay as many of the policies do not cover natural calamities,” said Anand Gopal, a resident of Duo Layout.

Satish Reddy, the local MLA, said he would place a demand for compensation before the BBMP council. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy – who too met the residents – said the government will consider a measure of compensation if the House Committee orders it.

But residents are not entirely convinced. “We do not have any expectations. But we want to show the amount of loss we have suffered because of the dereliction of civic agencies,” said Mr. Gopal.
