The Hindu rolled out simultaneously from a second modern printing facility, in addition to the existing one, in Bengaluru on Sunday night to meet rising demand for quality journalism and to fulfil an ambitious targeted growth in circulation while ensuring timely morning deliveries across this cosmopolitan city.

Copies go out from Bengaluru also to other parts of Karnataka, which is served in addition from Mangaluru, Hubballi and Hyderabad.

The new printing press, situated in The Hindu ’s facility at Bommasandra, is a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Diamond Spirit cold-set system that could handle 24 pages, all-colour, in one go, reaching speeds of up to 75,000 copies an hour.

On the pre-press side, the unit is supported by a state-of- the-art Agfa computer-to- plate system that could produce up to 300 plates an hour. A new Japanese mailroom conveyor system has been set up.

The Hindu started printing operations in Bangalore in 1970 on this same date, March 27, receiving page images from Madras employing facsimile transmission technology. Copies were being air-lifted to Mysore State from Madras prior to that.

All through its history, the 138-year-old newspaper, published by Kasturi and Sons Ltd., has had a significant and meaningful presence in terms of coverage and reach, across what is today the State of Karnataka.
