It was a sort of Women’s Day at the University of Mysore on Friday as women notched up the top and the highest number of gold medals at the 95th annual convocation here.

A jubilant Shruti Krishna Bhat, whose parents and Guru Hindustani musician Pandit Vinayak Torvi were present to witness her unforgettable moment, was the first to receive the medals – 12 gold medals and three cash prizes – in MA in philosophy from Governor Vajubhai Vala. Being the university’s top medalist, there was a loud applause in recognition of her accomplishment. She aspires to take up research. Shwetha K.L., a native of Kunigal in Tumakuru, was on cloud nine when her name was announced at the convocation. For, Ms. Shwetha, who has bagged 10 gold medals and three cash prizes in M.Sc. in chemistry, is the second top achiever.

“I’m indeed excited….not at all imagined to bag so many medals. However, I was certain of getting the first rank in chemistry,” a thrilled Shwetha told The Hindu . On her future plans, she said: “I have plans to take up research next and teaching as my career later.” “Being the first rank holder, I will get the Ph.D. admission without any entrance. I will do research in the university,” she added.

Of the 28,580 students, 16,259 women candidates were conferred with different degrees
