The Education Department set up a tent school on the Mysore palace premises early this week to ensure that the 14 children of mahouts who have come to Mysore for the Dasara festival, continue their education.
A teacher has been posted at the tent school.
These children were studying in classes 1 to 6 in Hunsuru and surrounding areas.
Chandra Patil, Deputy Project Coordinator, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the school would function till the mahouts return home after Dasara.
As a follow-up, the department will monitor the children till they re-join their schools, he said.
Mr. Patil said the children would be provided food under the midday meal scheme and milk under the Ksheera Bhagya scheme, besides being provided accommodation. Meanwhile Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists’ Association (MyLISA) has come forward to educate the children about libraries to enhance their knowledge.
N.S. Harinarayana, secretary of the MyLISA, told The Hindu that the MyLISA would set up a temporary library adjacent to the school from Monday, and a few senior librarians would teach the children.
Mr. Harinarayana said comics, general knowledge books and other genre of books would be kept at the temporary library.
Additionally, the MyLISA is planning to donate some books to the children if they evince interest, he said.
